Holocaust Movie ~ For Families

Normally you won't find me recommending movies. It isn't something I typically do. BUT, this movie did make a significant impression on us and on our boys. As with anything, you must use discretion as to what you will let your children watch and at what ages. My husband and I previewed it prior to letting our children see it. We felt that it was very appropriate for our 12 and 14 year old boys...I would highly recommend it for others in a similar age group (and for those that are older, of course).

"The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" really is a *must see* for all those who wish to remember and never repeat some of the mistakes of the past. This movie portrays the holocaust in WWII Germany through the eyes of two eight year old boys. One is a German Commandant's son and the other is a Jewish boy within the confines of a concentration camp. It is an amazingly touching and realistic story which will move you and your family. Our 14 year old son told me that he has never been so affected by a story as he was by this one. It leaves a lasting impression.

It is a clean and family friendly movie (for those with children in the above twelve category)...there is not one swear word or misuse of God's name. Please do bear in mind that it deals honestly with the horrors of the end result of the extermination camps of Hitler's regime. I hope it will be something you can use to educate your older children on this disturbing event in history. May we never forget.

Hi Camille,
Our family just saw this movie a few weeks ago and we too liked it very much. I agree with you that it may not be appropriate for younger kids but it is a good movie to add to your study of the holocaust.

Have a great weekend,

Christa

I will make a note of this. There are very few movies I can bear to watch these days. So full of profanity or lewdness, I end up shutting it off. And those are PG13! One we have seen recently and absolutely, highly recommend is "Faith Like Potatoes". A true story, and one I hope to own someday. It is a movie for everyone....if you can get a hold of the additional DVD which is a commentary, it would be well worth it. Very inspiring!

Christa ~ I am glad you agree...I always am hesitant to recommend any movies these days! :)

Cindy ~ I totally agree with you...we rarely can watch anything without it being rated "G"...even then you can be in trouble. We have shut off MANY movies in our day...

We have watched "Faith Like Potatoes" and it was certainly a breath of fresh air to witness the work of God in that man's life. Interesting that it is based on truth as well. Thanks for recommending it!

Sharon ~ I rarely will say a movie has impacted me...but this one really did! I hope your weekend is wonderful too!

Blessings,
Camille

Thank you for sharing. We will be studying WWII next, so I will add this to our list of resources.
I remember seeing the trailer for it and it looked good!

Blessings!

I watched this with my two older boys and it was very powerful. It showed the consequences of people's actions. The ending was a surprise, but very appropriate.

Camille, I just have to say, what a joy it is to have you comment on my blog. I just love you! You are like a breath of fresh air and are very encouraging...

Nadine ~ I hope you find it to be useful in the lives of your children...I think it gives a true representation of what it would have been like living in those times.

Stacie ~ I am glad you are endorsing this movie along with me...I agree it was powerful! Your comment about my comments on your blog encouraged me tonight...thanks so much! May God get all the Glory...He is the ONE that enables any of us to live for HIM.

J ~ Be prepared...it is emotional, but very appropriately done...let me know what you think!

This was on my list of movies to "preview" for family movie night... I was glad to hear you thought it was appropriate for your boys. When we went to the Imperial War Museum in London this past spring my son had to walk out of the Holocaust exhibit... he was in tears. Maybe this will a good way to "teach" him about it in a different light...Thanks for the movie review :)

Hi Mavis ~ It still deals with the Holocaust...so it is emotional, but obviously some emotion is appropriate...you might still want to preview it to be sure you are happy with what your family will see. Apparently the author of the book, on which the movie was based, had children in mind when he put his story to paper.

Have a wonderful week!

That's funny you should mention that movie. Someone else was just talking about it the other day and I thought to myself I'd like to see that. I'll have to add it to our netflix queue.
