What Seems to be Helping

One of our children was recently
diagnosed with Crohn's Disease.

We were told that there is no cure.

We were also informed that diet will
not affect the disease.
They said that the child can eat normally,
as long as the prescribed meds are taken.

Mercifully, a friend who
learned of our troubles recommended
"Breaking the Vicious Cycle".
She loaned me her copy.

I devoured it.

Then, I bought my own copy.

We are following the prescibed diet to a *T*.

Under the guidance of a natuoropathic physician,
natural supplements such as probiotics, digestive enzymes
and others are being given to help stabilize the child.

Am I devastated?

No.

All things
work together for good
.
Truly.
All things.

Our hope is in God Who is
the Great Creator of the Universe!
HE does all things well.
It is to HIM that we pray.
HE faithfully leads us so gently along.

We are encouraged.

I'm sharing this information
with the desire that someone will benefit
from our experience.
We are new to this journey and have yet
to *prove* all these methods,
but we are very encouraged with the
initial results.

Many Blessings,
Camille

cannot advise what would work in your particular case.
I am only sharing what it is we are doing for our child
in order that it may be a blessing to someone else.

That book looks interesting. Do you like it?

We have taken probiotics for a long time. I have noticed that they really help us.

I also took digestive enzymes. Eating raw foods helps when I cannot take the enzymes (when I'm nursing).

Thank you for sharing your journey with us~

HI Camille,
I'll come back later and actually read the post in full. There's another book I'd recommend, if you haven't purchased/borrowed it already called "The Maker's Diet" by Jordan Rubin. He is a Christian with a Jewish background. However, what made me think of you is that he was diagnosed with Crohn's when he was 19 and almost died from it. through a serious change in his diet, he has been in complete remission for about 10 years now. In any case, he started eating an all organic diet. It's a good book just for information. I'm also interested in the one you displayed a photo of here. I have ulcerative proctitis. At first the doctors thought I had Crohn's. I don't, thankfully. However, still have some similar issues. So this book looks really interesting. Love and hugs from Oregon, Heather :)

p.s. I'm going to be back into blogging regularly. I took a bit of a Facebook break. It was heavenly..and it ended up being a general break from all internet usage ;) :)

Thank you for sharing this, Camille. I am sure this will be of great encouragement and help to others. I think we all could benefit by reading such a book.
I pray your child will continue to be helped by the supplements and guidance of the naturopath and the Hand of the Great Physician!
Sweet Easter Blessings to you and your dear family!

Camille, I'm so thankful that you have something hopeful to be using. It's ALWAYS beneficial to eat this way anyway! And... God can make a way, where there seems to be no way!

I am sure this is really going to help someone who is facing the same challenges - it is wonderful that you are sharing what you are finding out Camille. I would be interested to know what the author thinks about bran - recommended or not? I think I remember reading in Jordan Rubin's book that bran was very irritating for people with crohn's disease, yet I know many people use it in their diets believing that the fibre will improve their digestive health.
On the subject of diet and digestive health there is a breakfast cereal available here (not a bran based one and not a genetically modified cereal) which has been developed for digestive health. It contains superior levels of 'resistant starch.' There are quite a number of anecdotal reports about the positive effects it is having for people with chronic digestive issues such as crohn's disease. I'm always skeptical about such claims for commercial breakfast foods but as this was developed by a scientific institute, I decided to try it during my last pregnancy when I suffered chronic constipation and bouts of IBS which was quite debilitating. After just 2 weeks of eating this cereal for breakfast each morning, all my digestive issues completely resolved and never returned. I was amazed and we have kept on buying it (believing that it actually does what it claims, i.e improve digestive health) and mix it in with our home made muesli as it is fairly expensive. It is quite tasty and the children would all eat a box in one sitting if I didn't ration it. I understand they may eventually market it worldwide but it has been so popular here that they have had problems meeting the demand. It flies off the shelves at my supermarket. If you are interested email me and I can tell you more about it, they do have a website. Perhaps there is a similar product in Canada (well you do grow a lot of grain!) but I gather this cereal is unique and a world first. I just thought to mention it because of my personal experience. Hope this is helpful!

It really amazes me how many doctors don't think our diet effects things like this or so many other disease and behaviors. It does, our diet can make a huge difference and I'm so glad you are seeking natural methods instead of just taking the medicines. I'm also thankful you are wise enough to rely on the Lord for His strength, wisdom and comfort. May He bless you in your efforts.
Blessings,
Rashel

Dear Cinnamon ~ Yes, I'm so thankful for this book, I do like it! The principles laid out make so much sense. The first part of the book explains scientifically why the diet works, the middle section has testimonials, and the final section has recipes. The recipes are basic and good, but there are other recipe books that are more diverse out there for this diet, some of which I have purchased. :)

Dear Heather in Oregon ~ Welcome back! :) A break is necessary sometimes...I understand completely! About the book you mentioned, yes, I have heard of it, but I don't have it...I should get a copy. Thank you for twigging my memory on it.

Dear Raeann ~ Thank you so much my friend! You encourage me greatly!! :)

Dear Heather in Canada ~ I appreciate you! Thank you for your sweet encouragement...it's a blessing to my heart. :)

Dear Ann ~ Thank you for your input...it's great to learn of what's worked for others! As far as this diet goes...no grains of any kind...so, no bran. :) That cereal sounds interesting...I'm so glad it worked for you! I'll send you an email to ask for the link...thank you!

Dear Julia ~ You are sweet...thank you for the hugs...and for your prayers! What a blessing! (((Hugs))) back to you. :)

Dear Rashel ~ What an encouraging comment...thank you so much! Oh yes, how we MUST rely on the LORD for everything!! How wonderful HE is! :)

Dear Jackie ~ Thank you so much my friend! What a blessing it is to bring one another to the Throne of Grace. I greatly appreciate your prayers. :)

Many blessings,
Camille

I can't believe they said that diet would effect it. Diet has so much to do with Crohn's. I have two friends that have it and they are very much affected by what they eat.

glad you are finding some outside help!

Hi,
I'm really not sure how I found your blog, but as I scrolled down and saw the SCD diet book, I was so surprised!! My 15 yr. old son started the SCD diet almost 4 weeks ago. He has ulcerative colitis. He's still on prednisone - weaning 5 mg every week. We don't have a 'natural' doctor helping us...just reading things on the internet, etc. We're seeing the medical doctor tomorrow. Wow - I know if you're like me, you are super busy in the kitchen, and with all the rest of life, but I'd like to email you sometime and see how you all are doing with the diet. We're not all doing it, but I'm trying to make SCD dinners for all of us -big change from all the casseroles, etc.
God bless you!!

Welcome Terri ~ What a blessing that you are seeking out natural ways to help your son. I know the helplessness that one feels when there seems to be no answers...how wonderful that you are being pro-active! Your boy is blessed. Yes, there is a lot of *kitchen time*, but it seems to be helping so much...it makes it worth it! :) I'd welcome an email from you...just please know that I am on this journey just like you are, and I can only share what I have been doing ~ one Mum to another.

Many blessings,
Camille

Hi Camille,

This book came up in some of my reading and I was wondering what your thoughts are on it given all that's happened in recent months and the time elapsed since this post?

My sweet little Greta is struggling so much and her poor gut can't handle much past breastmilk. With her first birthday less than 2 weeks away, she is really wanting to eat with the rest of us.

After the fiasco with sweet potato (green diarrhea for nearly 3 weeks), we've been leary of giving her anything...

All of her health issues keep bringing us back to her gut.

Dear Heather ~ I am thinking a new post on the subject is in order. In the meantime, I hope to reply to you in an email. I'm so sorry you have been going through this with your precious little girl...it's so difficult. I will be praying for you tonight.

Blessings to you!
Camille
