Real Comfort

"Seek durable riches, a treasure that cannot be taken from you,
a city which hath lasting foundations.
Do as the apostle Paul did.  Give yourself to the Lord Jesus Christ,
and seek that incorruptible crown He is ready to bestow.

Take His yoke upon you and learn of Him.
Come away from a world which will never really satisfy you,
and from sin which will bite like a serpent,
if you cleave to it, at last.

Come to the Lord Jesus as lowly sinners, and He will receive you,
pardon you, give you His renewing Spirit, fill you with peace.

This shall give you more real comfort than the world has ever done.
There is a gulf in your heart which nothing but
the peace of Christ can fill.  Enter in and share our privileges.
Come with us, and sit down by our side."

Quoted from "Holiness" by J. C. Ryle pages 117-18

Truly, there is nothing better in this life than having peace with God which
gives courage and hope for the future, all because of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Look to Him and Live!

The Quotidian (26. 9. 16)

Quotidian: daily, usual, or customary;
everyday; ordinary; commonplace.

Calvin's ride for 48 hours.

He was restricted in the car rental department due to age.
(And, he needed a car for an entire day of work on Vancouver Island.)

Emma is loving this course!

Where she left it.

Trying to help her Mama.

On his way to work and I made him pose for a photo.

Done with posing....rushing.

Sheets on the line in September!

Ready. Set. Go!

Morning view.

Happy Monday Y'all!

Flashback Friday ~ The Boys' Bears

Our three boys each had a special bear when they were little.
Security blankets, if you will.  They went with them everywhere.
The bears were brought along to church in the hopes of getting the boys to sit quietly
during the preaching part of the service.  Those bears were snuggled with at bedtime.

Periodically, they required a washing and were subsequently hung out to dry.
On one such occasion, I snapped a photo.  I didn't fully realise at the time
how precious it would become.  But, precious it most certainly is!

L to R: Fraser's "Bear", Austin's "Teddy",
and Calvin's "Pooky" ~ Spring 2000.

Calvin, Fraser, and Austin ~ Summer 2000.

As the years passed, each of the boys gave up their bears.
One by one, they were tucked away for safe keeping.
Before we were really ready for it, our little men grew up.

These days, we are treasuring up the old memories
as we seek to treasure up the new.
And, God is good.  All the time.

Happy Friday!

Training Ground

"Faith told Moses that affliction and suffering were not real evils.
They were the school of God,
in which He trains the children of grace for glory;

the medicines which are needful to purify our corrupt wills;
the furnace which must burn away our dross;
the knife which must cut the ties that bind us to the world."

Quoted from "Holiness" by J. C. Ryle page 138.

Tasks Rather Than Times

We have just begun our eleventh year of home education.
Our three young men have all graduated from high school.  Emma is our last student.
As the school year came to a close last spring, Calvin gave me some insight.
It was a light-bulb-moment.  Perhaps I'm just slow to learn?

It has revolutionized things for our girl.  And for me.

I always had assigned certain amounts of time per day per subject
on each child's schedule.  I thought it was the best plan of attack.
However, Calvin's way is better.  And, it is working fabulously.
Tasks rather than times, and weeks rather than days, are laid out.

When the week of work is done, it's done.  Brilliant!

Why didn't I implement this type of scheduling sooner?  I wish I had.
It has made such a difference in the way things run around here.
What about you?  Do you have any tried and true secrets to share?
Tell me everything.  I'm all ears.

Happy Monday!

Something Solid

"Now assurance goes far to set a child of God free from this painful
kind of bondage (doubts and fears), and thus ministers mightily to his comfort.

It enables him to feel that the great business of life is a settled business,
the great debt a paid debt, the great disease a healed disease,
and the great work a finished work; and all other business,
diseases, debts and work are then by comparison small.

In this way assurance makes him patient in tribulation,
calm under bereavements, unmoved in sorrow, not afraid of evil tidings,
in every condition content, for it gives him a fixedness of heart.

It sweetens his bitter cups; it lessens the burden of his crosses;
it smooths the rough places over which he travels;
it lightens the valley of the shadow of death.

It makes him always feel that he has something solid beneath
his feet and something firm under his hands --
a sure friend by the way, and a sure home at the end."

Quoted from "Holiness" by J. C. Ryle pages 107-08

It is so true that the more sure we are of where stand with the Lord,
the more settled we will be in all of life's circumstances and situations.
We cannot have lasting peace until we have peace with God.
The only way to have peace with God is through the Lord Jesus Christ.

Have you found peace in Him?
If not, run to Him today.  He is faithful to save
all those who come to Him for deliverance from sin.

Absolute Necessity

"It is useless to conceal from ourselves that the age we live in
is full of particular dangers.  It is an age of great activity,
and of much hurry, bustle and excitement in religion.

Many are 'running to and fro', no doubt, and
'knowledge is increased' (Daniel 12:4).

Thousands are ready enough for public meetings,
sermon hearing, or anything else in which there is 'sensation'.
Few appear to remember the absolute necessity of making time
to 'commune with our own hearts, and be still' (Psalm 4:4).

But without this there is seldom any deep spiritual prosperity.
I suspect that English Christians two hundred years ago read their Bibles more,
and were more frequently alone with God, than they are in the present day.

Let us remember this point!
Private religion must receive our first attention,
if we wish our souls to grow."

Quoted from "Holiness" by J. C. Ryle page 89.

This book has been a challenging, convicting, and encouraging read.
Although penned nearly 150 years ago, it is so applicable to today's world.
How good and gracious our great God is to give us these resources
to spur us on in our walk with Him.  He alone is worthy of all our praise.

Happy Thursday!

The Quotidian (5. 9. 16)

Quotidian: daily, usual, or customary;
everyday; ordinary; commonplace.

On top of the world.

Two of my men...

...on their annual trip with two of their friends.

Their campsite.

Their stuff.

Their sustenance.

Airing out.

Austin's rose tree broke with the wind and needed a severe pruning.
Howie bandaged it up and now we wait.
(We came home to it laying in the grass with a half-severed trunk.)

I'm holding out hope that it will survive.

First soup of the season.

Last outdoor swim of the season.

Pen to paper ~ a note to a sweet friend.

Chomping at the bit.

Our two university students (first and third year).

About to pass the torch.

No more "N"!

For our girl.
