Absolute Necessity

"It is useless to conceal from ourselves that the age we live in
is full of particular dangers.  It is an age of great activity,
and of much hurry, bustle and excitement in religion.

Many are 'running to and fro', no doubt, and
'knowledge is increased' (Daniel 12:4).

Thousands are ready enough for public meetings,
sermon hearing, or anything else in which there is 'sensation'.
Few appear to remember the absolute necessity of making time
to 'commune with our own hearts, and be still' (Psalm 4:4).

But without this there is seldom any deep spiritual prosperity.
I suspect that English Christians two hundred years ago read their Bibles more,
and were more frequently alone with God, than they are in the present day.

Let us remember this point!
Private religion must receive our first attention,
if we wish our souls to grow."

Quoted from "Holiness" by J. C. Ryle page 89.

This book has been a challenging, convicting, and encouraging read.
Although penned nearly 150 years ago, it is so applicable to today's world.
How good and gracious our great God is to give us these resources
to spur us on in our walk with Him.  He alone is worthy of all our praise.

Happy Thursday!
With Love, Camille

I'm struck by the thought that he wrote this 150 years ago about people who lived 200 years before him. Did I read that right? But I look back at him, 150 years ago, and think life must have been much more pure then.

Thanks for sharing from your readings. Nothing new under the sun. Life was slower then as we look at it. Our technology keeps grabbing for our attention and we are not to keep ourselves from His word. Always find time to give God praises due. Blessings, Becky

Sandi ~ You read that right. Incredible to consider, isn't it? Hugs! :)

Becky ~ I agree...technology certainly must be kept in its proper place. What a challenging thing it is! Hugs to you. :)

Being still as life rushes around me is definitely my biggest challenge 😀 So many demands of us mamas. What a wonderful thought that He wants to have a relationship with us. We need to continue to strive to make Him our all and all despite our circumstances and seasons of life. Working on this for sure!
