Emma has been reading up a storm.
She seems to have been bitten by the
same bug as her Mummy was at that age.
What a blessing!
J.O.Y.
Some of the earliest novels I read featured
The Bobbsey Twins ~
two sets of twins in one family.
The stories are set in quieter days and portray a
loving family who make their own fun.
Emma has enjoyed meeting them and
the adventures they have are right in step
with her own imagination.
How lovely to be able to
share these with her!
Currently available are the first twelve books
from a much larger series.
If you can find any of these at used book stores,
snap them up, as they are treasures to build
any child's library with!
The Boxcar Children
are another series of books
that appeal to the younger reader.
I didn't grow up reading them,
but they have Emma's stamp of approval.
What I like about these books is that they were
written long ago and represent
many of the values we are seeking
to instill in our children.
One word of caution ~
I know that there are newer titles available and I am
not familiar with the quality of their stories.
They may be just fine, but in my experience,
there are times when a new author
comes along at a later date
to add to a series of books and
sometimes does not do the
original series justice.
What were some of your favourite
books growing up?
I'd enjoy hearing about them.
Please share!
Blessings,
Camille

My children have these books. We love them. I read them to them at night time sometimes. Its nice to read clean books. And they are fun too.
I LOVED Nancy Drew. Read and own every single one! I need to go back and reread them now. :) I loved The Boxcar Children, too.
Hi Camille, Thank-you for stopping by my blog today :) I just loved The Boxcar Children as a kid and my daughter is currently eating them up. Her goal is to read them all and there are over 100 I think :) Thanks for mentioning the Bobbsey Twins, I think she would love them too.
Another book she loved reading, as did my 11 yo son- My Side of the Mountain by Jean George.
I loved the Bobbsey Twins too! I also enjoyed Charlotte's Web, Little House series (Laura Ingalls Wilder), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Island of the Blue Dolphins (probably for older than your Emma), Trumpet of the Swan, B is for Betsy, oh I should stop. When I was older I loved Anne of Green Gables! Betsy-Tacey series (can't remember the author, but there are several in the series.) Now I'm rambling. I'm glad your daughter enjoys reading so much!
I remembered some other ones, but they are out of print. Thornton Burgess wrote a LARGE series of children's books. Mother West Wind is one, most are about animal characters. They make good read-alouds too. And Beatrix Potter is another favorite author. Wind in the Willows is a must read! In reading over my list, it seems like I like animals talking!
I loved all the Little House books my daughter is enjoying them now as well. We are currently reading Misunderstood Betsy again one of my childhood favorites. I agree with you about the newer titles. It's difficult to judge some of them for appropriate content and messaging unless you read the book yourself. Really enjoy your blog and the recipes you so graciously share, Blessings Robin in SoCal
Dear Chelle ~ How fun that you read these to your children! What lovely memories they will have of that tradition! I agree...*clean* books are such a blessing. :)
Dear Jennifer ~ Oh yes...Nancy! That was me too...I must have read 40 of them. Emma has begun gobbling them up...the *old* ones...not the *new*. :)
Dear Catherine ~ Thank you for your visit here...it's lovely to *meet* you. Thank you too for sharing another title with us here...I've not heard of that book. It's always wonderful to get recommendations. :)
Dear Lois ~ What treasures you mentioned! I *LOVED* the "Little House" books...all nine of them. I read whatever I could get my hands on biography-wise about Laura Ingalls Wilder too. :) And yes, of course, "Anne of Green Gables"...I devoured all eight in that series. Thank you for entering into the discussion...it's lovely to learn about some *new to me* books. I will have to check them out. :)
Dear Robin ~ Thank you for sharing your love of reading with us here. Oh yes, "Little House"...such a wonderful series of books!! I remember reading one of them aloud to our two oldest when they were only 5 and 3 years old and it inspired them to dig a well in the back yard (with man-sized shovels)...it was a serious business!! LOL! :)
Thank you each one for sharing your love of reading with us all. It will be fun to check out some of the books you mentioned. I have never heard of some of the titles. :)
Many blessings,
Camille
I used to love the Bobbsey Twins! And the Boxcar Children are great books, too!
I loved the Bobbsey Twins books when I was that age. I'm not familiar with the Boxcar Children. Will have to check that out. We just finished up "On the Shores of Silver Lake" last night and are going to start "The Long Winter" tonight. The Laura Ingalls Wilder books were my absolute favorite growing up.
Hi Camille,
I've heard a lot of good things about these books. My favorites were the Little House books and the Nancy Drew books. I'm getting ready to read a Nancy Drew book soon...just for old times sake. Oh,and YES...it's very hot here...98 degrees today. Have a great weekend.
Jackie
Dear Jenn ~ Thank you for adding your stamp of approval to these books...it's always good to know what other Moms think about such things. :)
Dear Jackie (Cheesemakin') ~ No wonder we get along so well! "Little House" were my all-time favourites too. :)
Dear Jackie ~ Wow! 98 degrees!! We rarely get such heat...maybe just for a few weeks in the height of summer. Today was the first real bit of warmth I have felt from the sun for quite awhile. Yaay for Nancy Drew and Little House...treasures! :)
Many blessings,
Camille
I deVOURed books from little up! I liked the Boxcar Children, Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden, Hardy Boys, Three Investigators (see a pattern?), Elsie Dinsmore, and on and on. This brings back such happy memories! Going to the library was a huge treat for us. I still like that smell. :)
My oldest daughter Joy devoured the Boxcar children when she was younger. It is so hard to find books on a younger reading level that are not questionable. So glad to have found these too!
Dear Rhonda ~ Oh yes...the smell of books...*love* it!! I think that's why I couldn't survive with *just* a kindle and no books on the shelves. And yes, I do see the trend...LOL! :)
Dear Jackie (Bondservant) ~ I agree...it's so difficult to find books that are not questionable. That's why I like the *old* ones...but even then we must be discerning. I'm glad your family has enjoyed these books too. :)
Many blessings,
Camille
